4321 narrates four versions of one young man’s life, how it might have differed given small altered circumstances. This wore me down. Instead of becoming more engaged I was exasperated by it at about pg 700. I kept thinking I could have read three novels in the time it took me to wade through this.

“4321” is a tome– an innovative, annoying conglomeration of 4 unique possibilities for one man’s life. The author best describes the novel himself through the main character Archie Ferguson, who observes that “the story was released from the domain of jokes to become a parable about human destiny and the endlessly forking paths a person must confront as he walks through life.”. Astonishing, a masterpiece, Paul Auster’s greatest, most satisfying, most vivid and heartbreaking novel -- a sweeping and surprising story of inheritance, family, love and life itself.

I kept thinking I could have read three novels in the time it took me to wade through this. If I hadn’t finished it I would probably had given it two and a half stars but the conclusion did show the Auster’s intention and his dedication to his thought experiment. And if it took me half a year to read, I can only imagine the half a lifetime Auster put into it. 4321, Paul Auster: 3.5 stars.
